Saturday vs Friday

So many weddings are on Saturdays…right?  Which means that when you are ready to book your venue for your big day, suddenly, you are competing with many other couples for the perfect venue, on your perfect date.  There are ways to beat the crowd and plan that perfect day you envision… plan a Friday wedding!!

This Saturday competition applies not only to the venue, but your other vendors as well.  The best photographers, DJ’s, florists, musicians, planners…all have limited availability.  Depending on business size and prior commitments, all of your preferred vendors may be busy when you inquire for your day.  That is especially true for the busiest months of the wedding season.  (Those month’s are typically June, September and October here in SW Colorado.)

Vendor Options

Because  I can only bring the experience and skill Ive garnered over more than 500 DJ events to ONE wedding per day, that means I turn down multiple couples for nearly every Saturday during the popular months. To avoid this conflict, many couples take a year or more to plan their event. I get booked by more than a year out multiple times each season by couples that know exactly what they want, where they envision it, and when they want it to happen.  For many though, this is not possible or they miss the opportunity.   This is evident for many of my friends local to my area in SW Colorado. They forget that Durango is a destination wedding location and that they must compete against hundreds of other couples for the local talent, whatever services they offer.  I’ve had to turn down dozens of people I know because they wanted me on a Saturday in a busy month….and didn’t inquire until two months out.

Whether you are a local who missed the boat or an out of towner trying to throw your dream wedding…Saturdays can be a real mess at times.  We pick Saturday to accommodate our schedules and crowd.   Unfortunately, picking a Saturday can mean your wedding loses its luster if you miss out on that great venue, that awesome florist, or the rocking DJ.

Planning a Friday wedding often solves many of the conflicts that Saturdays present. The first advantage is that venues and vendors book a fraction the amount of Fridays.  With many venues, a Friday event presents extra income they might not expect and they might even let you negotiate a discount!!  If not a discount, you have a much higher chance of getting that venue locked down.   This also applies to the vendors in your wishlist. Both wedding venues and wedding vendors love to book Friday weddings.

For independent wedding vendors like myself, these extra days make the prospect of going full time as a DJ possible. Adding Fridays to the schedule doubles my potential income. This means I can dedicate all my time to making your wedding the very best.  I encourage my clients to create Friday weddings for my own sake as well as theirs.

Help Your Guests

You may think that a Friday event is bad for guests, but often times people will take weekdays off to travel to destination weddings.  In that case,  a Thursday afternoon flight is more available than most Friday flights anyway. In addition, locals will gladly take a day off to attend and happily take Saturday to recover.  Saturday is also the easiest weekend day to travel, so those in a pinch can head home without the crowds that hoard airports on Sunday.  An extra down day will allow your out of town guests to see the destination outside the venue.  For either type of guest, that extra day is a welcome treat.

Friday FTW!!

Friday plans can make your wedding the absolute best: giving you less competition for the best venues, vendors, and services; a more casual atmosphere for guests; maybe even some savings in your budget.   While Saturday may be the best for you and yours, if you are struggling to make your wedding plans great: Get Married On a Friday!!

(As an alternative, Sunday can give you many of the same advantages and eliminate the same hurdles.)
