The Lost Art of the MC at Your Wedding

In my 20+ years experience as a DJ and MC, it is apparent that the art of the MC is highly under appreciated!!

From concerts to weddings, music and art, or anything in between, a professional and well spoken MC can be the difference between an event that soars… or one that just falls flat.

Strange as it seems, people actually like to be told what to do!!

Or, at least be informed so they can be on board with the festivities.  It is remarkable how much more comfortable people feel at an event when they know what to expect; getting excited for the next act to event; where to find drinks, hor’ deuvres, or just when the program will get underway.

A good emcee can read the room.  They will know when information is needed; when to drop a joke or break tension with sarcasm; or just when to tell people they are looking good!!  A good emcee is personable. A good emcee has a sharp wit and sense of humor.  In my experience, its also essential that the emcee is fully invested in the event.  Nobody believes an insincere host.  And that is what the emcee actually becomes: the host of the concert, speaking event, or wedding.

What parts of your wedding or event could be made better by simply talking to your crowd and keeping them informed?

One moment that consistently needs to be addressed at weddings is when the bride and groom will return from photos.  Everybody is eagerly awaiting to greet the bride and groom, and people often get restless or distracted if they don’t know what to expect.   Our modern attention span is making this so important.  A few words from the MC can keep people ready and excited instead of restless or anxious.

When a DJ is selling their services, take a look at ALL the services they offer.  Unless your planner or producer has already considered hiring an Emcee in particular, ask if your choice can DJ as well as host the event and MC. What experience do they have in public speaking?  Are they comfortable assuming that role? Having a dual-threat DJ/MC can add so much to the event by creating good communication with guests, keeping the timeline intact, and adding humor and commentary at the right moments throughout the day.

DJ might be the service you are looking for, but Emceeing is the service you are forgetting, and will hope you had at your next event!!!  Hire a DJ who is also a pro level MC, bring the forgotten art of public speaking to your event, and make it exponentially better, because the art of the MC is highly under appreciated!!
